Information Exchange Tracker (IET)

Web statistics are of great importance to manage the success of your website. Consequently, many tools are available on the market that claim to provide this crucial information. However, no tool seems to be capable of providing an easy answer to simple questions, such as:

  • Which department's content performs best?
  • Which product groups are visited most?
  • Who should be rewarded for good web results, and who should take action to improve performance?

The tricky part is to relate web statistics to the logical structure of your sites, and more importantly, the organization of your company. E.N.G. Efficiency's Information Exchange Tracker provides a powerful modeling capability that helps you solve this issue. Content performance analyzer translates web statistics into actionable management information.

Product overview
Information Exchange Tracker (IET) is a tool to provide metrics about supply, demand and quality of information that is disclosed through the web, whether internet or intranet. IET has a number of advantages compared to traditional web statistics tools:

  • IET has the flexibility to be integrated with the customer database or employee database to properly identify web visitors
  • IET can approximate "unique visitors" much more precisely
  • With IET it is easy to create custom reports using SQL
  • IET also allows storing additional user information, such as ratings and behaviour on other websites
  • IET provides access to the raw data to, for example, properly define and analyse click streams

The following table provides an overview of the type issues that IET may help solving:

Intranet (e.g. knowledge management) Internet (e.g. commercial website)
  • Quantify "knowledge management contribution" during appraisal interviews
  • Properly reward people for sharing information ("What's in it for me?")
  • Provide knowledge managers insight in what knowledge is reused, and what not
  • Improve quality of information objects
  • Reduce search/browsing times
  • Properly quantify number of visitors, returning visitors, sessions, and page views
  • When linked to customer database, follow up visits to certain (product) information
  • Adapt web site design and structure to improve conversion rates

Functionality
IET provides the following functionality:

  • Store visitor behaviour in a relational database:
    • Customizable cookie to identify and recognize (returning) visitors
    • Session id
    • Browser info (application, user agent, colours, screen size)
    • Date/time
    • IP address
    • Referrer
    • Host name
    • WHOIS info (registrar, country)
  • Define meta data (can be extended/customized as required):
    • Domains (URL grouping)
    • Owner
    • Organization
  • Rate viewed objects
  • View and navigate standard web-based reports (protected with login)
    • Metrics:
      • Unique visitors
      • Returning visitors
      • Page views
      • Sessions
    • Dimensions:
      • Referrers
      • Raw data
      • Geography
      • Browser
      • Screen size/colours
      • Time (year, month, week, day)
  • Allow flexible reporting using SQL

Technology
IET is easy to install and platform independent. The application has been developed in Java/JSP and comes with API documentation. In case of the ASP model, no server-side implementation is required.

Client-side installation
Server-side platforms

Operating system
Database
Web server
  • Transparent pixel in HTML pages to be tracked
  • JavaScript to track page exit and navigation to new URL (optional)
  • Cookie to recognised identified and returning visitors
  • Windows NT
  • Windows 2000
  • Unix (including Linux, Solaris, HP-UX)
  • Oracle
  • MySQL
  • SQL Server
  • Apache/Tomcat
  • IIS/Jrun
  • Other java-enabled web servers

Implementation
There are two alternatives for implementing IET: ASP model and In-house installation. The table below outlines the advantaged and disadvantages of the ASP model versus the In-house installation option:

Advantages of ASP model Disadvantages of ASP model
  • Immediate availability of metrics
  • Only client-side implementation required (server is already installed and operational)
  • No hardware and software investments required
  • No management and maintenance required
  • Sensitive information stored outside company
  • In case of firewall: no client IP-address and host name captured, only proxy
